What is dressy casual?
My clients often ask me how do I do dressy casual? They are awesome at getting dressed up for work and know what they need to wear when they are in the garden but when they want to hang out with their children or go out to the pub with friends they have more trouble. There are a few basic garments that will help you build a casual wardrobe that can take you from sideline to a dinner out with friends.
1. Invest in a good pair of jeans or causal trousers. There are so many different price points and style available. Choose trousers that are comfortable, high enough in the rise so they don’t expose tummy of bottom. Make sure the leg width works with your body type. If you are heavy in the leg then very tight trousers are not going to work for you.
2. Make sure you have 3 – 5 basic tops – ¾ sleeve length and full length in a variety of colours. Remember that black only suits around 20% of the population. They will go underneath summer tops, and keep you snug. Wear two together to create interest.
3. Have a good casual jacket. One that looks good when you are going out. Buy the best you can afford. This would be a jacket you keep on when you go out. Try with a funky short leather option or a fitted classic blazer. This will do you for at least 5 years.
4. Invest in a great pair of shoes that you feel fantastic in. Make sure they tie in with your outfit. If you have red or coloured shoes you need a top in a similar colour that ties your outfit together.
5. A WOW top. This can be worn over your basics (2) or on its own. You can create different looks with it – try a funky shirt, a patterned top or an interesting cardigan.
Invest your money in the trousers / jeans and all the other pieces can be bought in sales which are on right now. Still some great bargains to be had! Dressy casual is looking smart but not corporate. Keep some structure on your garments like the jacket. Sports wear is not dressy casual. It is best kept for the …sports field!
